91.1% waxing Moon

A 1000 frame SER file was captured by AstroDMx Capture using a Touptek Astro AE676M camera with a Stella Mira 66mm ED APO refractor. Focused on a bright star using a Bahtinov mask and then centred on the Moon. The best 80% of the frames in the SER file were stacked in Autostakkert!, wavelet processed in waveSharp and further processed in GIMP

Milky Way Landscape Photos

I have visited Freeshwater West Beach in Pembrokeshire to photogrsph the Milky Way. There are interesting dunes and a War Memorial at the north end of the beach. I took foreground shots and then used a tracker without the foreground to shoot 40 minutes of tracked milky way photos. Each exposure was 20 seconds at ISO3200. A 16mm f2.8 lens mounted to my Astro Modded Sony A7s camera.
The tracked milky way images were processed in Pixinsight with Dark and Flat frames. The resulting stacked image was further processed in Photoshop. The froeground and Milky Way images were blended in Photoshop using the latest Sky Replacement tool. This very effective and worked well with the Wat Memorial cross.

NGC7380 (The Wizard nebula) in SHO

Some periods of clear skies on the night of the 15th September 2026 allowed me to complete 6 hours of SHO integration of the Wizard nebula with my ASI533MM pro camera fitted to a Sky Watcher Esprit 80 triplet refractor. Two version were produced; an SHO and a HOO/SHO blend, which were finally merged together as one. I used 4x drizzle integration in Pixinsight to increase resolution, with final adjustments made in Adobe Lightroom.

The Sun in Ha & WL

Ha & WL views of the Sun taken on the afternoon of 15 September 2026 with a PST and a Dwarf Mini. For the Ha image an Apollo-M-Mini camera was used with a x2 Barlow on the PST on a Sky-Watcher Solar Quest mount, with a 300 frame SER taken with Astro DMx Capture and 90% of the frames stacked using 1.5x drizzle in Autostakkert!4, wavelet processed in Registax and further processed in Pixinsight's Solar Toolbox and Adobe Lightroom. The Dwarf Mini frames were first processed in PIPP to orient correctly and 40% of the frames were stacked and processed using the same tools as the Ha image.

NGC 6781 The Snow Globe in SHO

I collected a further 2 hours of SHO data on this planetary nebula to make a 5 hour total integration using 3x drizzle to enlarge the size of this tiny object which was cropped to show the object in more detail. The data were taken using NINA with an ASI 533MM Pro camera attached to a Sky Watcher Esprit 80 triplet refractor fitted with a field flattener. Integration and processing was done in Pixinsight and Adobe Lightroom.

Sh2-101 Tulip Nebula

Tulip Nebula (Sh2‑101) is a bright hydrogen emission region in the constellation Cygnus, illuminated by hot O‑type stars. At the top of the frame you can clearly see the distinctive shock bow of Cygnus X‑1, created where the black hole’s jet interacts with surrounding interstellar gas.

M44 Beehive Cluster

I'm not a fan of this kind of post‑processing, but as I'm slowly preparing to wrap up — and at the same time reach the culmination of the season — I'm working through every piece of data to bring it to some sort of “final” stage.

This is M44 — the Beehive Cluster, an open cluster in the constellation Cancer. It holds a special place for me because it was the object that started my journey into astronomy, and later into astrophotography, when one evening I accidentally pointed my binoculars at it. This cluster is visible even to the naked eye as a faint, misty glow.

Propeller nebula (DWB 119) in SHO

I collected a further 6.5 hours of SHO data on the Propeller nebula in Cygnus which I combined with a previous run of 12 hours to give a total integration time of 18 hours. The additional data has brought out some of the fainter structures of this vibrant nebula which does resemble a two-bladded propeller or "X" shape. Data acquired with an ASI 533MM Pro camera using a Sky-Watcher Esprit 80 ED triplet refractor fitted with a field flattener. Integration and processing done in Pixinsight, with final adjustments made in Adobe Lightroom.

Combined images of the Soap Bubble nebula (PN G75.5+1.7)

I combined images of the Soap Bubble nebula (PN G75.5+1.7) from this summer and 2023. In 2023, 5 hours of HOO were captured by AstroDMX Capture through a William Optics 81mm ED APO refractor with an SV605MC camera. Recently 1 hour of HOO were captured through the same scope with a QHY Minicam8 mono camera/filter wheel combo. To combine, the images were processed in PixInsight, Picture Window Pro, SASPro and Gimp 3. The Soap bubble is very clear.

It is strange to think that this nebula was only discovered in 2007 by amateur astronomer Dave Jurasevich using an Astro-Physics 160 mm EDF air-spaced triplet apochromatic refractor. He imaged the nebula on June 19, 2007 at f/7.7 and again on July 6, 2008 at f/5.7.

M13 and M92 Globular Clusters

Over the past few weeks I’ve been revisiting some of my early astrophotography data, cleaning up old folders and giving a fresh post‑processing pass to a few forgotten targets. Today I’m sharing two reworked images of the globular clusters M13 and M92.

I’d like to dedicate these images to Dr. Simon Helan, in appreciation of his inspiring society talk “Globular Clusters and the Galactic Halo.” It was a fantastic presentation that made me look at these ancient stellar systems with renewed curiosity.

Clear skies to all.

M27 Dumbbell Nebula

The Dumbbell Nebula (M27), one of the brightest planetary nebulae in the sky, is the final stage in the life of a Sun‑like star. Located roughly 1,200–1,360 light‑years away, it spans about 2.5–3 light‑years and shows the characteristic dumbbell‑shaped structure that gave it its name.
  1. At its centre lies a hot white dwarf — the remnant of the original star — whose intense ultraviolet radiation ionizes the surrounding gas. This makes the nebula glow in vivid colors, dominated by oxygen and hydrogen emissions, producing the familiar turquoise‑red appearance in OSC astrophotography.

The image was captured under the challenging, changeable skies of Swansea. The data was collected in May — a short 5‑hour project.
